Low Fat Milk Lowers Heart Disease Risk

Low Fat Milk Lowers Heart Disease Risk

Drinking just one glass of low fat or fat free milk a day could help keep your heart healthy, according to a new study.

Drinking at least one serving of low fat milk or milk products each day lowers your risk of kidney disease and heart problems by 37 percent, say researchers in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

The scientists from a group of universities in the United States and Norway measured the kidney health, linked to heart disease, of more than 5,000 people between the ages of 45 to 84. They tracked eating patterns and tested for poor kidney function and an extremely high risk for heart disease.

They found that people who drank more low fat milk and milk products had healthier kidneys. In fact, milk was the only food group that could significantly reduce heart disease risk on its own.

The researchers say milk protein, vitamin D, magnesium and calcium may contribute to milk’s potential heart health benefits.

An overall healthy diet, including low fat milk and milk products, whole grains, fruits and vegetables was also associated with a benefit.

Another recent study found that organic milk contains more healthy fatty acids, antioxidants and vitamins than conventional mass produced milk, so it could reduce your risk of heart disease and cancer even further. To find out how, Click Here.
