Omega 3 Fish Oil Prevents Asthma

Omega 3 Fish Oil Prevents Asthma

New research provides evidence that fish-based fatty acids known as Omega 3 have an important role to play in preventing asthma.

Scientists studying asthma and allergic reactions have found that a molecule produced by the body from Omega 3 fatty acids helps resolve and prevent respiratory distress and asthma.

It’s just one of a number of benefits the anti-inflammatory Omega 3 offers.

Omega 3s are already known to protect against heart disease, relieve arthritis, keep your brain and immune system healthy and prevent depression – plus, they’re vital for pregnant women and children to help their brains develop healthily.

For this study, researchers from Harvard Medical School in the US found that Omega 3 fatty acid hampers the development of airway inflammation found in asthma.

Other studies have indicated that increased levels of Omega 3 fatty acids are associated with lower asthma rates among people, but the reasons to support that observation had not been understood.

Omega 3 is found in oily fish, including sardines, salmon, mackerel, trout, anchovies, herring, pilchards and fresh tuna – canned tuna doesn’t count as most of the beneficial fish oil is removed during the canning process. It’s also available through supplements – just make sure you choose the Omega 3 capsules and not the Omega 6 ones, as people usually get more than enough Omega 6 in butter, spreads and processed foods.

In the UK, 1.1 million children (1 in 10) are currently receiving treatment for asthma. An estimated 75% of hospital admissions for asthma are avoidable and as many as 90% of the deaths from asthma are preventable. Every 6 hours, one person dies from asthma in the UK. Yet only one in five children with persistent asthma have it under control, according to another recent study. To find out more, Click Here.
