Megan Asks:

There are so many different straighteners with lots of technical words like ions and ceramic and infra red. What should you really look for in a straightener?

Lisa’s Answer:

The most popular brand of straightening iron are called GHDs and this is the iron that my team and I use in salon. However, there are many different straightening irons on the market today so what you really want to look for is… the right width of iron for your hair type, ceramic plates to glide across the hair easily, rounded edges to create curls or flicks, built-in microprocessors to conduct heat fast and retain heat and last but not least; infra-red heat to protect the hair by sealing in its natural oils, moisture and hair colour.

Kelly Asks:

Are perms really back in fashion? Who suits them?

Lisa’s Answer:

We are definitely seeing the return of a lot more movement in the hair in the form of soft curl which is being created using velcro rollers and tongs. Clients that are asking for this aren’t necessarily asking for perms, they are wanting the ‘soft, lived-in’ curl almost like a ‘slept-in’ look (think Kate Moss, Gisele and Keira Knightley’s dressed curls) which unfortunately cannot be achieved using perm solution yet! Remember it’s all about gravity and whatever you are doing with curls they will ALWAYS drop and until that changes (or gravity does) then curls won’t stay. I’m sure manufacturers are working on producing a perm solution/gel/wax/product that will create a soft wave however, to date this isn’t available no matter who says they are!

Ben Asks:

I’m going grey on the sides! Should I go with it, cut it off or dye it?

Lisa’s Answer:

As a colour expert I would usually always recommend colouring your grey bits! BUT some guys look great with a touch of grey in their hair and in some ways it’s the making of them! There is a service we offer in the salon especially for gents called ‘touch-colour’ which is where we blend a bit of colour into the sides just to cover the areas where it’s needed. The colour will naturally fade after a few weeks so you would just need to pop in for top-ups now and again.
